Beloved St. Louis Custard Spot Suffers Fire Damage

St. Louis, MO - A devastating fire broke out at the Ted Drewes Chippewa location on Tuesday, March 8, 2023, causing the beloved frozen custard shop to temporarily close its doors.

Cause and Damage

According to St. Louis Fire Department spokesman Garon Mosby, the fire started around 10:30 p.m. above the kitchen area. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.

The fire caused significant damage to the electrical system and kitchen equipment. The extent of the damage is still being assessed by insurance adjusters.

Community Impact

The temporary closure of the Ted Drewes Chippewa location is a major blow to the local community. The shop has been a popular destination for frozen custard lovers for over 80 years.

"It's like a part of our city has been taken away," said longtime customer Sarah Jones. "I've been coming to this location since I was a kid."

In the meantime, the Ted Drewes locations at 6301 Chippewa Street and 4224 South Grand Boulevard remain open for business.
