UCF Knights: A History of Gridiron Greatness

From Humble Beginnings to National Prominence

The University of Central Florida (UCF) football program has experienced a remarkable rise to prominence over the past decade, becoming one of the most successful teams in the nation.

Founded in 1968, UCF initially played at the Division II level before transitioning to Division I-AA (now known as the Football Championship Series) in 1990. The Knights achieved their first major success under coach George O'Leary, who led them to four consecutive NCAA Division I-AA National Championships from 1998 to 2001.

Joining the FBS and Making History

In 2001, UCF joined the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), the highest level of college football, and became a member of Conference USA. The Knights struggled initially in the FBS, but under coach Scott Frost, they emerged as a national powerhouse.

In 2017, UCF finished the regular season undefeated with a 13-0 record, earning the nickname "Team Chaos." They defeated Auburn in the Peach Bowl to cap off a perfect season and finished the year ranked No. 6 in the AP Poll, the highest ranking in program history.

Recent Success and Future Outlook

UCF has maintained its success in recent years, winning multiple conference championships and making several bowl appearances. In 2021, the Knights won the Gasparilla Bowl, their eighth bowl victory since joining the FBS.
